Introduction
The pharmacy, besides a profession and a set of sciences mainly destined to the preparation of the medicine and to the restoration or maintenance of the public health, is also heritage. Utensils and premises, through which professionals have been able to exercise their work over the centuries.
In this museum we show an overview of the professional and scientific activity of pharmacists during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, at a time when the industrial revolution would change, as in many other disciplines, the aesthetics and dynamics of the pharmaceutical world. The Museum have a rich collection of pharmaceutical tools.
Materials used in elaboration process, conservation and dispensation of the medicine, but also used for the analysis or samples of simple vegetables, pharmaceutical specialties cataloged by pharmaceutical forms, advertising, books and pictures of pharmacy offices.
History
The idea of creating a pharmacy museum emerged at the end of the last century, when the professors of History of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Legislation of the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University Mª Teresa López Díaz, Esteban Moreno Toral and Consolación Martínez García, jointly to graduates Joaquín Espejos and Javier Ballesteros, began the work of collecting materials that were of interest for the project by requesting help from different institutions, among them the different Official Pharmacy Schools of the Andalusian community and private individuals, such us Avenzoar.
The loans and transfers of materials to the Department of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Technology allowed to organize the exhibition “The Pharmacy and the art of curing” in 1999, which took place at Museo de Artes y Costumbres Populares de Sevilla (Popular Arts and Customs Museum), whose curator was the professor of the Department of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Technology María Teresa López Díaz. In addition to those already mentioned, Francisco González Lara and Antonio Ramos Carrillo participated as collaborators.
Many years passed with the material stored in boxes. In 2012, it was decided to dedicate the stored space to lodge a Museum of History of the Pharmacy that served as a teaching center for students. The idea came from Professor Antonio Ramos Carrillo, with the acceptance of Esteban Moreno Toral and with the collaboration of Javier Ballesteros Morales, Consolación Martínez García and Rocío Ruiz Altaba.
Today, the Faculty works on developing an understandable museum open not only to students but also to general public. As a museum, it has a mission of researching, conservation and protection of its historical heritage.
The documentation will help to give life to each object. In the near future the museum would like to recreate a pharmacy of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
